Telemedicine Nurse Specialist

After completing his nurse training, Sharon continued to develop his professional practice in a variety of community based care environments, whilst pursuing further academic skills and qualifications. His last UK clinical role was that of a Project Nurse where he was part of a team supporting the implementation of a computerised information system in all clinical areas of Perth and Kinross NHS Trust. In 1999 Sharon moved to be based at the University of Abertay, in Dundee where he was teaching and working on his research thesis on remote healthcare provision. Sharon joined the Royal College of Nursing in 2002 as an informatics adviser - a post he held until 2007. After a short career break, outside the UK, Sharon has rejoined the NHS as a Telemedicine Nurse Specialist at the Scottish Centre for Telehealth.

In his new role Sharon will be looking to pilot the use of Telemedicine in support of care for children with complex and palliative care needs. He will also assist the Child and Adolescence Mental Health Service in the North of Scotland and explore clinical implications and applications of Telemedicine in Child Protection practice. Based in Ninewells, Dundee, Sharon is also mentoring local developments of using Telemedicine to link newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with their parents – hospitalised in another ward on site.

He said: the unique post of a Telemedicine nurse specialist offers me an opportunity to combine the three things I am most passionate about: Kids, Nursing and Technology. Nurses should grasp the opportunities offered by Telemedicine and ensure the new service is clinically driven and needs led.
